Gymnastics World was established in 1983 as Gymnastics Center of Tucson by current owner Yoichi Tomita. The name was changed to Gymnastics World in 1988 after Tomita served as assistant coach to the USA Olympic Men's Gymnastics Team in Seoul, Korea. Later, the gym was re-named to Gymnastics World Central (GWC). GWC has served the children and youth of Tucson for over 30 years and also produced 12 Junior Olympic National Champions. At Gymnastics World, we emphasize training and progress, rather than results and competitions. GWC offers all levels of recreational gymnastics, adult classes, and competitive programs for boys and girls. GWC has over 1000 students participating in gymnastics programs every week, instructed by dedicated coaches and staff members.
From a modest start with 70 students in 1983, Gymnastics World has grown to become one of the finest training facilities in the nation.
Our goal is to help children achieve physical and emotional growth to gain self esteem through gymnastics training in a fun, progressive, and safe environment.
Born and raised in Japan, Tomita was the Japanese National High School All-Around Champion in 1973. After graduation from high school, he came to the USA on a gymnastics scholarship to California State University in Long Beach. Tomita graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education and then moved to Tucson in 1979. Since GWC's opening in 1983, Tomita has coached 11 USA Jr. Olympic National All-Around Champions (to date). In 1988 and 2000, he served as an assistant coach for the USA Men's Olympic Team. Tomita has also served as the USA Gymnastics Men's Program Committee Chairman and on the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors. Needless to say, Tomita's extraordinary passion for gymnastics is evidenced in his dedication to promoting the sport for many years.
